ABEG WETIN YOU DEY DO FOR STAGE?

Hello everyone it has been a while, well I took a break and only came back when Kay threatened to fire me (as small madam concern na).It’s not like I abandoned my job, I just lost every inspiration to write and decided to take a break .My break was however greeted with lots of weird stuffs, well let me stop bugging you guys with rubbish; now back to business. It is true and pleasing to say that Nigerian music has been been making airwaves globally, like I recently heard Asa’s song in a shop in the U.K. I just grinned from ear to ear because I love and respect her.
Something I am proud of is the production quality of most Nigerian songs they meet up to international standard .But when it comes to live performances it is an eyesore, I’m not even sure If I can sit through a Nigerian concert for now. I guess we all know that the main way international audiences connect to artistes is by live performances and concerts. Then I think what do we have to offer when it comes to live performances? Oh I just remembered jumping, shouting and fidgeting on stage.
Basically with time I have noticed the trend with international performers when it comes to live performances and I will list them below

  • A live concert especially a tour or concert has to feature a live band
  • You only use DJ’s when it is not your show
  • You must sing live except your routine features rigorous choreography
  • When a backing track is being played what should be heard are the instrumentals, back up and your live vocals
  • There is no hipster with you on the stage except it is a dancer or member of the band or maybe a set member.

So after going through the list you will agree with me that most Nigerian acts are not even ready to be world class performers. I am not hating or anything off that nature but how can you go to a concert and all they do is play their CD and just accompany the song by shouting few of the lyrics, jumping and gyrating .Well it is not the fault of the artiste alone, after most of the people go to the shows they come back tweeting positive stuffs to the artiste. What we call concerts most times are what international artistes call ‘club visitation’ and we accept this as concerts. What a shame!
Before going on a concert our dear artistes please employ the services of an event organiser, choreographer and music director. This will improve the quality of your performances, stop giving your performance to your younger siblings and Disc jockey(dj) to plan.

Fellow music lovers please stop tweeting and faking support when its mere ‘famzing’ for a poor performance even foreign megastars get booed when they deliver an underwhelming performance. Also who is the other dude always jumping on stage with a mic especially with a rapper, is that a backing rapper, sidekick or stunt double? Please kick that guy off your stage! Watch live concerts from foreign artistes and see how you can incorporate some stuff into your act. Learn the onions of your genre, so you don’t become a RnB artiste who gives a dancehall performance.
